Joanne (Currie) McLean

b. July 2, 2018

Joanne Edith McLean (nee Currie) July 15, 1955 to July 2, 2018 Beloved wife, mother, sister, friend, coach. It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we share the passing of Joanne McLean following a courageous four year battle with cancer. Joanne was born in Weston, Ontario the eldest daughter of Harvey and Vera Currie, both of whom are predeceased. After receiving an Honours B.Sc. in Kinesiology from the University of Waterloo, Joanne began a very successful career in the fitness and wellness business serving in both corporate and entrepreneurial roles with such organizations as Barbie Allen Dancercise, Nortel Networks and Astra Pharma. In 2003, Joanne began her own leadership and executive coaching practice, Soulzatwork, offering coaching services to both individuals and organizations. This work excited and fulfilled Joanne, and her success was a reflection of her exceptional skill and talent. She was soon invited to join the faculty at The Banff Centre for Leadership in Banff, Alberta to facilitate and coach in various leadership programs, a role she held for many years. Once diagnosed with cancer, Joanne recognized a need in Muskoka for a centre that would provide supports to cancer patients and their caregivers to help normalize their journey with the disease. Enliven Muskoka (www.enlivenmuskoka.ca) was co-created in 2016 by Joanne, and through the support of a dedicated board of directors and volunteers, is focused on fulfilling that vision. Joanne's love for her work saw her continuing to coach and to stay involved with Enliven up to a month before she passed. Joanne is survived by her husband, David, her son, Spencer, and her sisters Sharon Herrndorf (Chris), and Dale Porter (Richard). A memorial gathering will take place at Joanne and David's home at 612 Swallowdale on Saturday, July 7th at 11:00 am followed by refreshments until 4:00pm. Visitation will resume at 7pm until 9pm and again on Sunday from 2pm until 5pm. A Celebration of Life, in the tradition of an Irish Wake, will be held at Joanne and David's home at 612 Swallowdale on Saturday, August 25th starting at 5:00 p.m. The family would like to extend their profound appreciation to Joanne's care team over the years including Drs. Higgins, Cescon, Rask, Bedard and Selak. A special thank you to Dr. Lindsay Macmillan, Dr. Pam McDermott, Ms Norma Connolly and to each of the nurses from Bridging the Gap. Together, you each contributed to Joanne's comfort over the last several months. Rather than sending flowers, the family urges all to contribute to Enliven Muskoka through the donations tab on their webpage (www.enlivenmuskoka.ca) . Thank you.
