Fredrick James Armour Hopcraft

Fredrick James Armour Hopcraft passed away on September 20, 2026, at Muskoka Landing Long Term Care in Huntsville, Ontario. He was born on April 16, 1931, in Sprucedale, Ontario, and lived a long life marked by hard work, practical skill, and the simple pleasures he loved most.

After graduating from public school, Fred began working for Edgar Whte Lumber Camp and Saw Mill. He later took a job driving tanker trucks for British American Oil, where he worked for 35 years. During that time, he was recognized for his clean driving record, a fitting reflection of the care and steadiness he brought to his work. In retirement, he returned to Ilfracombe, where he became known as the local handyman, always ready to put his hands and experience to good use.

Fred found great enjoyment in the things that suited his nature best: fishing, puttering in his shop, and his enduring love of steam engines. Fishing was especially close to his heart—fishing, fishing, and more fishing. He also enjoyed attending steam shows, where his appreciation for steam engines could be shared and celebrated.

He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Lesley Anne Hopcraft, whom he married on July 20, 2019, at their home on the lake. He is also survived by his dear sister, Olive Phinney, the last of 18 siblings.

Fred was predeceased by his first wife, Barbara Hopcraft, with whom he shared 45 years of marriage. He was also predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Alice (née Brown) Hopcraft, and by his siblings Islay, Harold, Lorne, Violet, Eva, Norman, Clarence, Alice, Elsie, John, Gilbert, Alfred, Grace, Mabel, Muriel, and George. He now joins the many members of his family who went before him.

A private burial will take place at Hutcheson Memorial Cemetery.  A Celebration of Life will be held on October 4, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Billingsley Funeral Home, 430 Ravenscliffe Road, Huntsville, Ontario.

Fredrick James Armour Hopcraft will be remembered with affection for his strong work ethic, his dependable nature, and the quiet happiness he found in the outdoors, in his shop, and among the engines and places he loved.
