Douglas Metcalfe passed away peacefully on July 11, 2025, at The Pines long term care home in Bracebridge, Ontario at the age of 87 surrounded by loved ones.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Leona Metcalfe (nee Woodcox), with whom he shared 38 years of marriage.
Doug is survived by his three children, Lorraine Jarmain (Doug), Louise Apreda (Joe) and Jeff Metcalfe (Milena); his six grandchildren Andrew Jarmain (Allison), Cameron Jarmain (Dana), Alex Apreda (Tristan), Katie Fiore (Vince), Brittany Metcalfe (Justine) and Matthew Metcalfe (Valentina) and four great-grandchildren Carter and Jaxon Apreda, Elianna Fiore and Noah Metcalfe.
Doug was born in Sudbury, Ontario and lived in Falconbridge. He lived with his parents and relocated to Huntsville in his teens where he met and married Lee, the love of his. Together Doug and Lee built a life full of love, laughter and lasting memories. Doug and Lee were active members of the Huntsville community involved with the skating club, the Santa Clause parade, the snowmobile club and the curling club. They helped fundraise for the Huntsville Hospital Foundation and were involved with the Canadian Cancer Society for many years where Doug served one year as president. In his younger years he owned a plane and was a volunteer Fire Fighter for 30 years. Doug worked 31 years for Bell Canada (linesman and Health & Safety Inspector for Northern Ontario) and retired at age 51. After retirement he cared for and maintained many cottages on South Portage Road where he resided for the past 30 years. If he wasn’t working, you could find Doug enjoying hunting, fishing, boating, snowmobiling and four-wheeling with family and/or friends.
Doug will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to family, his friendly smile, his willingness to help, his straight-to-the point, bold and tell-it-like-it-is spirit. Anyone who met him, loved him and was touched by his charismatic and larger-than-life presence.
The family thanks the staff at Huntsville District Memorial Hospital (South Wing) for their care and support before transitioning to long-term care. A special thanks to staff and volunteers of The Pines for their tender and compassionate care of Doug for the past 10 months. You helped make his journey more comfortable.
We love you Dad (Grampa, Great-Grampa), you will be missed, and your memory will live on in our hearts forever!
In keeping with Doug's wishes, cremation has taken place. Doug will be laid to rest beside his wife on Sunday, August 10, 2025 at Dwight Union Cemetery, 1212 Dwight Beach Rd, Dwight, ON at 11:00 am.
