It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Bernhard Malich on the morning of March 5, 2026, just four months shy of his 97th birthday.*
Bernhard was born in Breslau, Germany, on July 13, 1929. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ruth.
Bernhard and Ruth met in Siegen in the 1940s, married, and moved to the wilds of Muskoka to build their life together.
They tirelessly cleared the forest and lovingly built their home on Lynx Lake Road.
Bernhard and Ruth will be fondly remembered for their deep love of gardening. Their beautiful flower and vegetable gardens were a joy to all who saw them. They often shared their harvest generously with neighbours who became family.
They were passionate about downhill skiing, swimming, music, and exploring new adventures.
Their home was always alive with music and warmth, welcoming friends and new faces alike.
Bernhard’s legendary annual Labour Day parties are forever cherished—a time when melodies from their guitars and accordions filled the air, a crackling bonfire lit the night, and food, laughter, and joy brought together people from near and far.
He will be greatly missed by extended family, friends and all who knew him.
Our heartfelt thanks to Bernhard’s dear friend Heinz and to the staff at Muskoka Landing for their compassionate and dedicated care.
A graveside service will take place in the spring, followed by a celebration of life that reflects the spirit of Bernhard and Ruth.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be deeply appreciated.
Rest peacefully, dear friend, until we meet again.
