ALLEN, Alice Elizabeth (nee Williamson)
Passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family on Sunday, February 13, 2022 at Algonquin Grace Residential Hospice in Huntsville in her 82nd year. Alice was born on September 8, 1940 in Sault Ste. Marie to parents Walter and Anna (nee Prudhomne) Williamson and raised alongside her 8 siblings.
Alice is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years William "Bill" Allen whom she married on July 5, 1969 in Bolsover, Ontario. She is the loving mother of Tom Allen (Deb Witmer-Allen) and Tamara Smith (Brad). Cherished and proud grandmother of Glen, Kyle (Theresa), Jonathan and Miranda (Tyler). Great-grandmother of Kaleb and Briar. Dear sister of Terry (Anna). Predeceased by her parents Walter and Anna Williamson and siblings Mel, Phyllis, Stan, Don, Lawrence, Harvey and Marilyn. Alice will be lovingly remembered by her dearest friend since preschool, Irene (Ken) Frier and by close family friend Pat (Grant) Mason-Graham. She will be dearly remembered by her many friends and extended family and, of course, the women from her quilting groups in Huntsville and Burk's Falls.
Alice earned her B.A. in English Literature at Queens University in Kingston, B. Ed. at Nipissing University in North Bay and Library Science Specialist at the University of Toronto. When thinking of Alice, family and friends will remember her love of cats, her feistiness, her competitive nature when curling or playing word games, the many hours and days she would spend quilting and perfecting the quilts she made or her strong sense of women's rights. Some would say it was the joy Alice felt and emanated when she would bring life to the characters she read to children and seeing the delight on their faces. She enjoyed quiet times at the family cottage on Georgian Bay and snowshoeing, rustling through the leaves or making maple syrup at Goodwill Heights, the family woodlot in Armour Township. In addition to traveling from coast to coast in Canada and to multiple American states, Alice and Bill traveled to international destinations such as Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Tobago, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Switzerland, Germany and Greece. Alice thoroughly enjoyed and excelled at gardening.
The family would like to thank the nurses, physicians and support staff for the excellent and heartfelt care she received during her stay at Huntsville Hospital and Hospice Huntsville.
The family invites friends to a visitation being held on Friday, February 18, 2022 at Billingsley Funeral Home from 1-2 p.m. The memorial service will follow in the funeral home chapel at 2 p.m. As an expression of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Algonquin Grace Residential Hospice in Huntsville or Huntsville Hospital Foundation.
